Message from the Community Association

The past year has been a difficult and challenging one for the Sunset Community Centre. The Covid-19 pandemic has cast a huge shadow not only on Canada and the world but on all of us as individuals.

The destructive third wave of infections, however, has waned. Canada’s vaccination program is now well underway. Sunset itself has been a vaccination site and will be a site again for a week in June.

Those seeking either a first or second vaccination should make an appointment through: www.getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca/ or gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated#translations

While the Centre closed entirely during the early months of the pandemic in spring 2020, it began operating again on a limited scale last summer and fall. While many programs have been deemed unsafe for the past year, under public health restrictions, that situation is now changing.

The Association applied for and received a larger-than-ever Summer Youth Employment grant from the federal government to support our summer camps and to keep the costs of those camps as low as possible. As a result, we are offering three different camp programs during summer 2021:

• Summer Escape Camp for 6-12 year olds, running July 5 – September 3
• Creative Remix Art Camp for 6-12 year olds, running July 5 – August 13
• Youth Camp for 12-16 year olds, running July 5 – September 3

We will also be offering specialty, half day or full day, week-long camps. For adults, we are offering indoor activities, including pickleball and badminton. More adult programs may be added, depending on the public health orders.

In the childcare area, we will be offering Preschool and Early Learning full day programs this summer. Both are for children ages 3-5 years.

The SCA Board of Directors and the Sunset Centre staff hope to continue moving toward full operations over the coming months. As people are now saying, there is light at the end of what has been a long and dark tunnel.
