Hello Neighbour

RE: City of Vancouver Adopt a Catch Basin Community Cleanup November 5, 2022

We are hosting a community catch basin and litter cleanup in your area on November 5, 2022. We have attached a poster to promote the event that can be shared with your network. Individuals or groups can register at vancouver.ca/sunset-clean-up.

The City of Vancouver has 40,000 catch basins in need of adopting, with about 6,200 that are considered high need and prone to flooding. The Adopt a Catch Basin program is a safe, simple way to spend time with family and friends while contributing to the health and safety of your community and environment.

Caring for a catch basin is easy, simply check on it before and after a heavy rainfall and clear away the leaves and debris. If the catch basin is clogged or full of sediment it can be reported using the Van311 app or by calling 311.

Catch Basin adopters provide a valuable service to the community and local ecosystems by:

  • Reducing street flooding and keeping streets safer for drivers and pedestrians
  • Reducing garbage from washing into adjacent waterways such as False Creek that are also habitat for aquatic species such as salmon.
  • Protecting homes and businesses from the costly impacts of flooding

We look forward to seeing you and members of your group at our event but if you canโ€™t make it, we encourage you to go to our Adopt a Catch Basin website vancouver.ca/catchbasin to adopt your own catch basin(s). We hope you will also spread the word to encourage your community to join our program.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Yours truly,
Sandra Davidon
