Sunset Community Association President’s Message

I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and is looking forward to the busy season ahead.

This year’s Sunset Community Association (SCA) AGM was held on April 18 and I would like to welcome our new members of the board, Agnes Lee and Ajay Sharma. I would also like to thank the current board members who are continuing to dedicate their time and efforts to the Sunset Community Association and the community.

We are excited to host our annual community celebration on July 1st! The success of this annual event is due to the commitment and support from the Sunset Community Association, staff, and youth leaders, community sponsors, the community at large, and Canadian Heritage. With many carnival activities, crafts, performances, and community engagement planned, we hope to see you all here to celebrate with us!

This year’s Summer Escape, Youth, and REMIX day camp staff team is working hard to plan a jam-packed summer with lots of recreational activities ranging from sports, art, education, and leadership development. Each year, our camps run at full capacity, and we are always looking to provide more opportunities for the community to experience our camps. This year, we are recruiting more youth leaders to run summer programs and camps, specializing in food, art, and science. It is always an achievement to see our youth volunteers return as staff and mentor volunteers.

Our Licensed Childcare programs are expanding their summer programs to welcome in more families in the community. With Licensed Childcare programs filling up season after season, and never-ending waitlists, we cannot wait to see more families participate in our programs this summer.

Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre is also busy with many events happening throughout the summer, such as the Gamelan Vancouver Open Rehearsals, Horte: Before the plate film screening, and the annual 2-Spirit Community BBQ. We look forward to seeing the community participate in these events and activities.

It’s a pleasure to share that the senior centre construction is progressing as scheduled. Currently, all construction documents are complete and building permits have been submitted. We are expecting construction to start this Fall.

We are anticipating more expansions to our programs and participation from the community in the upcoming seasons to welcome everyone.
