Dear Respectful Vancouver South/Sunset Community,

What a successful Canada Day Celebration on July 1st. The event was packed with diverse performances and fun filled activities. Thank you to Parks Board staff, volunteers, sponsors, Sunset Community Association (SCA) Board Members and to our great Sunset Community for all your support and participation. Thank you all for a job well done!

I am happy to share the good news with you that the space outside the main lobby is now an outdoor lounge, where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors while being inside the centre. We also look forward to the Sunset Park, which is almost complete with its upgrades and new additions.

Summer day camps at Sunset are in full swing, with full enrollments in all weeks for youth, children, and Moberly Arts Cultural Centre’s art camps. We expanded the enrollment to accommodate the needs of our community, as well as provided subsidies for families in need through funding from SCA and our partnership with the South Asian Family Association.

Sunset Community Centre continues to be inclusive and supportive of diversity. We continue to provide work experience opportunities and volunteer work for youth and young adults with developmental challenges (in partnership with the VSB and various agencies).

SCA Preschool and Out of School Care (OSC) programs are running at full capacity. OSC Manager, Paramjeet Munday and her staff are looking forward to a fabulous 2018/2019 school year. I encourage you to enjoy your community centre this fall by joining one of our programs, or to learn more about your community by joining a committee or a project team.

Joe Wong, Recreation Programmer who has been with Sunset for the last 3+ years, has moved on to another position within the Parks Board. We welcome back Clara Chan, who is filling in temporarily as the Recreation Programmer. We are also saying “see you later” to Manpreet Parmar and Harjit Dhanda who will be studying in England; before being Sunset’s Rentals Coordinator and Day Camp Project Manager, Harjit and Manpreet used to be participants and volunteers themselves in our children and youth programs. We wish them all the best.
