President’s Message, Winter 2019

Welcome to Winter

Respected Vancouver Sunset Community,

I hope you all had a great summer and memorable vacation with your families and loved ones.
I wish you a merry Christmas and Season’s Greetings.

On behalf of the Sunset Community Association (SCA) Board, I want to congratulate our newly-elected Mayor Kennedy Stewart, Councillors and Park Board Commissioners. The Sunset Community Association Board of Directors look forward to a positive working relationship with the new administration at City Of Vancouver to continue on delivering the programmes, as per the SCA vision of a healthy community, where diverse cultures thrive, everyone belongs and feel welcome to play, create and succeed in their own way.

SCA invests heavily in youth in our Community and it has paid huge dividends. This Summer, Day Camp was full and many children and youth enjoyed the summer at the Sunset. We have one of the largest day camp programs in the city. Our staff is well trained and our hard working group of volunteers provide endless adventures for the children. A big thanks go to Gabe Dennis, Sunset Community Youth Worker for his engagement with youth and his great team player skills, providing a good leadership. They make Sunset a true “Community Centre”.

Out-of-School Care programmes are doing very well. Thank you to Paramjeet Munday and the OSC staff!

I would like to welcome our new Park Board staff; Recreation Programmer- Mawi Bagon, Recreation Facility Clerk- Beatriz Becerra and Rental Coordinator- Ravina Rai. All three bring many years of experiences to Sunset.

Your Sunset Community Association and Centre Staff have been very busy with various projects which will continue in 2019:

• Spring break camp
• Game Ready fitness Youth Development Program
• Strong partnership with Vancouver school’s Community School Teams, Vancouver CHILL Foundation and South Vancouver
Neighbourhood House.
• Providing work experience opportunities and work for youth and young adults with development challenges (in partnership
with the VSB and various agencies).
• Canada Day celebration (Monday, July 1st 2019)

Respectfully submitted,
Bhalwinder Singh Waraich
President, Sunset Community Centre
