Senior’s Mobility Workshop

March 24 @ 9:00 am until March 24 @ 1:00 pm

Transportation can be a significant barrier for a senior that wants to connect with family and friends, participate in social programs, go for medical appointment or even shopping. Poor mobility and balance, declining cognitive ability, fare costs, and language difficulties can be an obstacle to accessing transportation options for seniors. South Vancouver Neighbourhood House has teamed up with Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST) a non-profit charitable organization with a long history of promoting sustainable transportation to provide Seniors? Mobility Workshop to help seniors learn about age-related changes to their transportation needs and provide appropriate options. There will be two portions to this workshop The TransLink portion is ‘transit training’ led by TransLink officials and features information about how to load and use the compass card, location and availability of designated seating for seniors, how to ask for the wheelchair ramp, etc. More advanced topics include trip planning, using the website to find information about departure and arrival times, transfer points, etc. The ICBC portion speaks to road safety issues and offers tips for senior drivers to stay safe on the roads. The topic of ‘driving cessation’ is discussed. Seniors are introduced to the process of obtaining a DMER (Drivers’ Medical Examination Report) and taking the Enhanced Road Assessment (road test). Resources that support transitioning away from driving towards other forms of transportation will be offered too.
