Hello to the Sunset
Community, from
your
Association
Board of Directors.
It is both a pleasure and a privilege to be writing this report as your new Sunset Community Association President. I follow in the footsteps of a long line of actively dedicated community mined people and, after several years of committee and Board work, feel that I am ready for this challenge.
The Olympics are long gone and Sunset Community Centre is no longer the newest building in the City Of Vancouver Community Centre network, but we still remain very busy with people from our local community participating in activities and programs of all kinds. On Canada Day, even though we had to hold our event indoors, we still had over 3000 people stroll through our hallways – thank you to everyone for coming and having a good time.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful staff and group of volunteers for their continued dedication and support. They are the reason we are able to provide quality programs, for all ages, at reasonable prices, that meet the needs of our exciting, diverse and ever-changing community. Please feel free to explore our safe and inviting atmosphere in the centre and perhaps use our fitness centre or take one of our excellent programs from our talented instructors – you will be glad you did.
I think it is important that you understand the role our Association plays in the operation of the Sunset Community Centre. The Sunset Community Association co operates the Sunset Community Centre, Ice Rink and the Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre with the Vancouver Park Board. Even before the new Sunset Centre was built, our Association was very busy for this community’s benefit. We were able to obtain 4 million dollars from Provincial and Federal sources, and then added over $900,000 more from our own resources so our new building on Main Street could be completed. Without these contributions, our Community Centre probably would have been closed down. After opening we purchased new Fitness Centre equipment for $80,000, and then bought new furniture, computers, office equipment and appliances so our centre could get up and running. Since that time, we have invested $155,000 in the Playground and $60,000 for blinds on the windows. We are currently looking at quotes for new floors for at least 2 rooms in the Centre, which will cost another $60,000. With the economic downturn and subsequent City and Park Board budget shortfall, we agreed to contribute over $40,000 to that end, as well as pay extra staff and janitorial costs that otherwise could have resulted in layoffs and/or an unclean facility. All this so our community can enjoy the safe, affordable and necessary programs and activities they deserve.
So please take up my offer to visit Sunset Community Centre, the Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre, and the Sunset Ice Rink. Opportunities abound, friendships await, and fun can be had by all.
Respectfully submitted. Karl Gulbransen, SCA President
